Description

Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It is classified as a tuftsin-derived regulatory peptide investigated for its influence on neurotransmitter signaling, immune modulation, and stress adaptation pathways.

Selank is based on the naturally occurring immunomodulatory peptide Tuftsin (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg), extended with a Pro-Gly-Pro tripeptide tail to yield the full sequence Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro. This structural modification was designed to improve metabolic stability while retaining the biological activity profile of the parent compound, an approach also explored in the N-acetyl Selank variant for extended research stability. Mechanistic research indicates that Selank modulates GABAergic neurotransmission, influences T-helper cell cytokines such as IL-6 and IL-10, and affects expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and related signaling cascades. Unlike classical benzodiazepines, Selank appears to produce adaptive-signalling-like effects in preclinical models without sedation or cognitive impairment.

Research interest in Selank spans stress-related behavior, GABAergic signaling, immune modulation through T-helper cell cytokine regulation, neurotrophic factor expression, and gene expression profiling in central nervous system tissue. Studies have shown that the peptide influences the expression of over 50 genes related to immune and inflammatory processes in rodent brain tissue (Andreeva et al., 2010, Molecular Biology). Additional work has explored its adaptive-signalling properties and interaction with inhibitory neurotransmitter systems, supporting continued investigation of Selank as a research tool for integrated neuro-immune studies.

See our Semax vs Selank research comparison for a side-by-side look at both compounds.

The peptide is supplied as a lyophilized powder to ensure optimal stability during storage and handling.
